Shelter Island, NY Tour - June 2004 |
|
Ann & Dick DeRenno organized wonderful day for NYConn, touring the north fork of Long Island, on the way to the DeRenno's Shelter Island summer cottage. After early morning runs from home, the group met at the Bridgeport, CT Ferry, hooking up with Ed & Dee Flax on the Port Jefferson, NY side, Then, on the road again along the rural Long Island roads towards Southport and the second ferry of the morning.
But not before a brief stop at the Lenz Winery for a tasting of Long Island wines from the local vineyards. With much discussion of the relative quality of their reds and whites, we headed on to Southport, just 7 miles from the eastern edge of Long Island, for the Shelter Island ferry. A five minute run across Peconic Bay brought us across to Shelter Island, a place with the feel of a New England coastal island, mixing traditional summer cottages on much of the island, with sophisticated summer mansions out towards Turtle Island.
